This adults-only tranquil spot is separated from family activities areas to ensure the most peaceful experience of an infinity pool and poolside lounge. Just off of the spa is an expansion of Disney Cruise Line’s signature Rainforest experience, now with the line’s first ice lounge, in addition to sensory spa showers, and sauna, steam  and dry rooms. A dedicated outdoor relaxation space with day beds and loungers complete the relaxing setting. For the best old fashioned on the ship, stop into the not-so-hidden bar at Hook’s Barbery and have the barber/bartender craft a glass for you. The bar at Hook’s also features bourbons, vintage whiskeys and ports, aged rums and other premium spirits, served in an intimate setting. There is absolutely no chance of going hungry on the Disney Wish, starting with the casual Marceline Market and its 10 tempting food stalls for casual dining for breakfast and lunch, and table-service at dinnertime.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Older teens and young adults can check out The Hideaway, an all-new space designed just for them. For families, one of the best parts of a family cruise with Disney Cruise Line is that kids often want to go to the complimentary kids clubs. This gives grown-ups a chance to have a drink, not rush through dinner and enjoy a few moments to themselves. Connecting both of these luxe dining options is The Rose, a lounge that offers wine, small bites and other adult-focused items designed for pre- or post-dinner enjoyment.

The Disney Wish features three new restaurants, starting with 1923, an elegant celebration of the year The Walt Disney Company was founded, combining Hollywood glamor with the Disney whimsey. It also features unique experiences for fans of Frozen, Marvel movies, and Star Wars, but more on that later. While it can hold the same amount of passengers (4,000) as its sister ships, the Fantasy and the Dream, it's technically the biggest boat.

wish cruise ship

Naturally we love spending time with our little ones, but the kids clubs are real stars of the Disney Cruise experience. When they're enjoying time with Disney-trained counselors (and characters!), you can catch up on your reading, get your hair styled like Elsa at Untangled or cut at Hook's Barbery — the first salons of their kind on a Disney ship. Concierge Staterooms - Disney storytelling soars to new heights inside these rooms that feature a premium level of service. Stay in a Tangled-inspired cabin, or rest in one of 7 special The Little Mermaid-themed spaces featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that look out to sea.

But the ship also caters every bit as well to couples without children who are looking for a premium cruise with all the big-ship bells and whistles. The Little Mermaid at World Disney Theater is a theatrical adaptation of the 1989 animated film. Created exclusively for the Disney Wish Cruise, this Broadway-style show features innovative special effects, striking choreography, and reimagined scenario that will surprise and amuse guests of all ages. Disney Uncharted Adventure is a first-of-its-kind interactive encounter where characters from different universes meet to create a fun-filled experience.

During this enchanting dining experience, you’ll celebrate the royal engagement of Queen Anna and Kristoff from Frozen while devouring Norwegian-inspired cuisine. Find yourself singing “Let It Go” while enjoying fresh seafood and sugar snowflake-decorated desserts. At a 4,000-passenger capacity, the Disney Wish is the fifth ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet.

Disney Wish Introduces a World of Food for All

Mermaid Lagoon is part of the adventure, and the Upper Deck area also features a "Toy Story"-themed area and an adults-only area. The creation of Disney Wish embodies this forward progress by charting its own path with a new style for staterooms, all-new restaurants, a different layout, additional pools, new ways to unlock "hidden magic" and more. Those who participate in the Uncharted Adventure game will have the ability to unlock a hidden layer of magic all around the ship.

My Initial Thoughts on the Disney Treasure Cruise Ship - DCL Fan

My Initial Thoughts on the Disney Treasure Cruise Ship.

DCL's innovative Inside Cabin features (industry's first) "Magical Portholes" - large, round-shaped LCD screens (positioned above the beds) projecting real-time outside views provided by the ship's cameras. Ship's dress code is similar to Disney's luxury resorts - daily casual and evening resort casual - men with jackets (no ties) and pants, women - with summer dresses (optional gowns). All Disney Triton-Class ship cruise itineraries include one "pirate night" and one semi-formal night. On 3-day cruises, one night is casual, 4-days are with 2 casual evenings, on 5-days and longer - 3 nights are casual. The other two units from this series (TRITON-class sisterships) are with postponed launches and deliveries currently scheduled for 2024 (Disney Treasure) and 2025 (Disney Destiny). The 2021-built/2022-inaugurated DCL Disney Wish cruise ship is The Walt Disney Company's newest and the first in a series of all three newbuilds.

Our reviewers were seated outside of the central ring of tables, but still had a good view (with the exception of an occasional person walking between the tables and the stage). You may also have a chance to dine at one of these restaurants for breakfast or lunch at no additional cost, but note that the menu will vary and you won’t experience any of the “show” aspects noted in the descriptions below. There’s never any charge for their planning services, and your cruise won’t cost anything more than if you’d booked it yourself. You might even find you save a bit thanks to The Vacationeer’s knowledge of the latest Disney travel deals (and plenty of other money-saving tips and tricks).

During the special event, the first hull block was lowered into the building dock, and, for good luck, under the keel was placed a newly minted coin that features the Disney character Captain Minnie. The coin was placed by Philip Matthew Gennotte - Executive Manager of the subsidiary Walt Disney Imagineering (Germany) GmbH. DCL also announced that Captain Minnie will be part of the ship's hull artwork (at the bow). Midship on decks there is a Mickey-themed family district with a total of 6x pools (various sized and with different depths) surrounded by spacious sundecks with plenty of sun loungers. The company's clientele consists almost entirely of North American travelers (USA and Canada).

Disney’s new cruise concept features 1,254 staterooms, 90% of which are outside cabins. This season, Disney Wish is set for three- and four-night voyages from Port Canaveral to Nassau, Bahamas, and Castaway Cay (Disney’s private island). Disney once again brings its energetic, Broadway-style performances to the Disney Wish with two brand new shows. The two theaters are the first in the cruise industry to feature Dolby Atmos 3D audio to enhance the movie-watching experience. One of Disney Cruise Line’s traditions is its family dining concept in which families rotate through the ships’ three main dining rooms.

Gentlemen will appreciate getting an old-fashioned shave (not to mention a cocktail) at Hook’s while the ladies are getting coiffed at Rapunzel’s place. We expect that the appeal of these two locations may be somewhat limited to most travelers, though they’ll certainly be popular for those choosing to have a wedding ceremony onboard the ship. From spa treatments to salon stylings, you’ll be able to step out in high style on the high seas.

Our three-night itinerary sailed from Port Canaveral to Castaway Cay, Disney’s exclusive private island in the Bahamas. The expansive beaches are lined with plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas to accommodate everyone onboard the ship, and complimentary open-air dining spots and (not-complimentary) bars are at-the-ready for eating and sipping tropical umbrella drinks. There’s even exclusive Castaway Cay souvenirs available in the on-island shops. "Disney Uncharted Adventure" is another fleet-first - an interactive family experience that combines imagination and VR technology into a multidimensional sea voyage full of Disney-Pixar characters. Via the app "Play Disney Parks", the phones/tablets transform into magical spyglasses allowing them to sail uncharted worlds, unlock missions, solve puzzles, conquer other "virtual cruisers".

As such, our reviewers recommended seeing it as early in your voyage as possible… it’s small enough (and highly-anticipated enough) that it might take a few tries to get in. Our reviewers appreciated the variety of food offered at Marceline, and also the fact that they had a wide selection of beverages that were included without having to buy an additional beverage package like on other cruise lines. (While Disney Cruise does offer drink packages for alcoholic beverages, it’s not necessary to purchase one just for sodas, coffee, tea, or juice — those are all already included in the cost of the cruise). The generous hours and wide variety of food offered kept our reviewers returning day after day to Marceline Market. Like Marceline Market, most of the items here are included with the cost of your cruise.

After checking into the kids club from the Grand Hall on Deck 3, children can zip down a magical slide that takes them straight into the space on Deck 2. While there are not any villains or live entertainment here, the more laid-back setting is much appreciated, especially if you're seeking a similar dining pace and styling to what's available on the first four Disney ships. Disney says this restaurant features the best of the golden age of Hollywood, with the style of the furniture inspired by what was actually in Walt's office. The menu pays tribute to the company's Californian roots, and the dining room has a more intimate feel thanks to being divided into two equal parts that mirror each other. Gents will enjoy getting a haircut, shave, or nail/skin treatment at Hook’s Barbery. The upscale salon is inspired by Captain Hook’s private quarters aboard the Jolly Roger from Disney’s Peter Pan.

How Cruise Ships Work Part 3: The Bridge and the Engine Room

engine room of a cruise ship

To put it in perspective, those who enter the room are required to wear hearing protection. The decibel range for the engine of a standard cruise ship exceeds 173 decibels. This is extremely loud and within a range that can damage hearing in seconds. Thanks to proper insulation and sound-reducing features, it won’t sound that loud. We outline what is contained in the cruise ship engine room, what it does, and how much noise and vibration is generated in this area.

AIDA's LNG-powered cruise ships

Diesel engines are the most traditional type of cruise ship engine. Older cruise ships may still use a diesel reciprocating engine to generate enough power to move them. Power is supplied to the ship through a transmission going to a propeller shaft. Without a cruise ship engine, these vessels would be nothing more than a floating hotel.

These interpretations enable us to determine where an object lies, and in some cases even what its contours look like. In the shipping industry, radars are used for monitoring traffic in ports and coastal regions, for collision protection, for collecting weather data, and for navigation. All this machinery is overseen by the Engine Control Room, which contains lights, screens, alarms, and switches where every piece of equipment can be monitored to ensure the cruise ship runs smoothly. Generators power all the vital functions to run a ship, like emergency lights, communications, and navigation systems. If the generator fails, then there are also backup batteries that can be used for short periods of time. However, guests don’t have to be concerned if their cabins are in this area.

Norwegian Cruise Line Kicks off European Season With New Options

In this sense, the hull provides the stability required to allow such a massive vessel to float on the water. The hull also needs to safeguard the ship and prevent it from sinking. As we will discuss in greater detail, within the hull itself, you will also find various compartments that can contain essential equipment needed to keep the ship functioning efficiently and safely.

Safety Alert

It also improves maneuverability, reduces fuel consumption and bad emissions. The new modular technology allows efficient and cost-effective custom-made systems to be built up from various existing and standard parts - mooring winches, anchor cable lifters, warping heads. Some of the lines (including Celebrity and Cunard) have suffered vessel breakdowns due to pod-bearing failures. Lots of voyages had to be canceled, extensive dry-docking periods were required for pod bearings to be replaced, and NCL didn't want to take the risk.

Cruise Ship Engine Room (Everything You Want to Know)

For illustration, if the QE2 is moving at 28.5 knots, this will use approximately 380 tons of fuel per day. The QE2 was launched on September 20, 1967 as a steam powered cruise ship. Twenty years later she was converted to electric diesel to prolong her sea life. The engine room still looks the same as it did before the conversion.

Where Are Engines Located?

All ships have installed ABB's "Intelligent Maneuvering Interface" and the "OCTOPUS" software optimizing fuel consumption and energy management. All these ships were constructed by the German shipbuilder MV Werften. Currently, almost 2/3 of all large-sized cruise vessels, icebreaking ships, and high ice-class cargo ships are with Azipod propulsion. The next photo shows Celebrity's Solstice-class ship propulsion (the 4 aft azipods, and the underwater hull shape). The cruise ship engine power is responsible for driving propellers, and the other possibility is producing electricity that is used subsequently to drive propellers.

When the captain defines a position where the ship needs to remain for a while without anchoring, the system automatically maintains the ship in position by using the bow and stern thrusters. Not all cruise ports have facilities to enable shore-to-ship energy. But many larger cruise ports have dockside electrical hookups that allow cruise ships to shut off their engines and run on the city’s electrical grid. The technology reduces harmful emissions by up to 95% while ships are docked. Despite their advantages, gas propulsion is not widely used in the cruise industry. Gas-powered ships are faster, but most cruise ships don’t travel faster than knots.

What a Cruise Ship Engine Room Looks Like

Almost all vessels will be upgraded with new hybrid powerplants that combine LNG-engines and batteries. ABB Azipod propulsion systems have a major impact on the vessel's operating efficiency - reducing energy consumption and bad emissions by up to 20%. Cruise ship engines also create vibrations under operation and those vibrations are going to be felt within the immediate area, including adjacent cabins.

From the present day of the cruise to the back at the beginning of the twenties, transoceanic traveling was at its high point. In the past, the only means of transportation was boat transport. This is where crews demonstrate how to safely use life jackets and outline a designated meeting point in the event of an emergency. Be sure you know where your life jacket is in your cabin in the event you should ever require one. The number of engines range from five to six, and the power rating for each one is between 9-15 megawatts. I did this tour on the Miracle September 17 this year and loved it!

This way the skipper could observe both wheels, while moving freely between the two and giving out commands. The side extensions are called bridge wings and often have a glass flooring for better visibility. Aside from housing generators and engines, pumps and heat exchangers are located here to cool the engine and stabilize motors and fins, in addition to the bow thruster system. Since equipment depends on electricity, modern ships contain backup generators on the outside of the main engine room in the event of a fire. Newer cruise ships have a large gap between the cruise ship engine room and passenger cabins to minimize noise and vibrations. Cruise ships have several redundant systems to ensure the safety and security of passengers.

This design maximizes the cargo carrying capacity of the vessel and situates the prime mover close to the propeller, minimizing equipment cost and problems posed from long shaft lines. On some ships, the engine room may be situated mid-ship, such as on vessels built from 1900 to the 1960s, or forward and even high, such as on diesel-electric vessels. It is unlike airplane propellers, as they required tremendous high speed to give the forward motion required for the airplanes, while cruise ship propellers didn’t need to turn fast. Cruise ships only depend on torque, RPM, brute power, or high speed. The bridge on the ship is where the ship captain and its crew member control the ship and manage the cruise ship’s direction and speed. From the narrow nautical origin, the raised platform “bridged” the two sides of the large vessel, allowing the captain to access both sides while commanding the crew.

The biggest ships like Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships have six engines and most other cruise ships have four. The main switchboard of the ECR is used to distribute the generated electricity to where it is needed on board. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines. We make sure cruisers are fully prepared for their cruise vacation with tips on ships and ports.Millions of travelers rely on Cruise Hive in the United States, Europe, Australia, and around the world. The largest ships, like the Oasis class from Royal Caribbean, contain six engines.

The smaller generators allow cruise ships to shut off the main engines in port, reducing pollution. Modern diesel-powered cruise ships have between four to six medium-speed (500 revolutions per minute) engines. Each engine can generate upwards of 25,000 horsepower or nearly 18.5 megawatts. The engine room is usually located near the bottom, at the rear or aft end of the vessel, and comprises few compartments.

Crew members can enjoy breaks and catch up on sleep in these areas. Some ships will also feature separate mess and canteens for crew members in the lower regions of the ship. Like just about any type of large vessel, a cruise ship hull will feature numerous different compartments and spaces. As you will learn, each plays an essential role in allowing the ship to function safely.

Modern, larger cruise ships use two or three stroke, low speed, crosshead, or medium speed engines. Engines operating at higher speeds tend to be found on smaller vessels. Determining the type of engine that is installed on a new cruise ship involves examining the engine’s size. The electrical power created by the engines drives this big azipod motor which turns the propellers, and pulls the ship forward. Basically think of how a jet engine pushes air across a plane wing — that's how an azipod and propeller pushes water across the rudder and drive/steer the ship.
